Since the dawn of salons, cutting hair and conversations have gone hand-in-hand. Got to do something while your hair is being cut and styled! Megan Trexler, the owner of the Clubhouse located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has been a stylist for more than 15 years. Her business focuses on men’s hair but is open to everyone. She’s met many different types of people while cutting and styling hair, and that’s what she loves most about her job — meeting new people and hearing their stories.
Creating websites, on the other hand, is like speaking Greek to Megan. She knew she needed a website to get customers to find her business and book online before they came in, but had no web design skills. That's where Zibster came in. With the help of Zibster’s Jumpstart service, her business went online. And when it came time to refresh her site a few years later, she got Zibster to handle it again.
We were fortunate enough to get to chat with Megan to get to know her and her business.
Tell me about your business — who you are, what you do?
We are the Clubhouse. A one of a kind group of girls working together to create an environment for all walks of life. Kids, dads, trans, grandpas, and anyone looking for a nice short haircut.
How long have you been a stylist?
I’ve been a stylist for 15 years. I’ve owned the Clubhouse Salon for Men for 11 years.
When did you open your business?
I opened my business when I was 23 years old. Nothing to lose but a PT cruiser and a wiener dog. Life was so simple.
What makes your business stand out among other salons?
Our team. Hands down. We have the best staff. We have incredible chemistry, and a true understanding of how to make everyone feel comfortable and the ability to listen to what they are looking for, bring it to life, and teach them how to maintain that look.
What kind of environment is the Clubhouse?
It’s energy changes from client to client, hour to hour. There’s always happy dogs, cold beer, and a welcoming smile.
Why focus on men’s hair?
Growing up in a family with 4 brothers I remember going with my brothers to get haircuts. They always had the most difficult time during consultations. I sometimes feel like men’s cuts are used as a time filler between color clients when it comes to some stylists. We wanted to create a place where men could talk, we could listen, and work together to create a style they could maintain and create without us being there with them.
What do you enjoy most about it? Is it the people and conversations the joy of actually styling hair?
Oh the conversations for sure. I enjoy the connection and conversation so much. Don’t get me wrong, I love cutting hair, and styling hair, but we love our clients, and getting to know new people. I think that’s one of the things that’s always worked in our favor. We truly value every person who comes in our door as a friend.
You've been with Zibster for a while — tell me your experience when it comes to websites?
I have ZERO computer skills. I’ve always been able to express what I’m looking for, and watch it come to life. Without Zibster we would have absolutely no online presence. I can’t imagine trying to navigate this part of owning a business without them.
Have you ever messed with building a site before?
I tried, and gave up. It’s the most frustrating thing for me. I am lucky if I can charge my phone and pay bills online.
You also recently refreshed your site with our Jumpstart Service — what was that like?
A miracle. Once again, picking out what layout and ideas I like, sending over a few ideas, and bam. We’re in 2021 and it’s the most beautiful website of all time.
What changes did you make?
New staff photos, menus, links to online books, and social media.
Does it feel more modern for your brand?
Oh yea. I feel like our website is like Tesla and I traded in my old Buick.
What do you like most about your site?
The crisp clean look. It’s just so modern and beautiful and simple. But it also has such a good representation of us going from messy kids running a salon, to adults who are a little more serious and organized. Ultimate glow up.
Would you recommend a Zibster Jumpstart for other businesses?
Omg yes!!
Anything else you’d like to add?
